Fairy tale Film: Pan's Labyrinth

Pan's Labyrinth an adaptation of traditional fairy tale narrative challenging the meta narratives of everyday.
  • In the film the little girl can be seen as the protagonist. She was going against the things that she is not allowed to do for example walk through the woods alone.
  • The mother in the film doesn't not support her daughter reading all sorts of fairy tale books, her views about fairy tales is very different to what we expect mothers to be and exposing to their children.
  • The film was set in the World War 2 which is already challenging the fairy tale norms. Fairy tales are usually set in not so intense and dark setting.
  • The film started with "A long time ago...." - Typical way to start a fairy tale film or book.
  • The little girl and her mother moved to where the Captain ("father") is based. "He's been good to us" - mother, this suggests to us that the mother is dependent to the captain. She is also carrying their son.
  • The captain in the film can be seen as the Bourgeoisie while its soldiers and servants can be seen as the Proletariat.
  • The captain is the stepfather of the little girl,  her father real father is dead. The mother being in a relationship with the captain suggest to us that woman can live without man, she needs a husband than just her daughter.
  • The little girl in the film wants to "reclaim" her role as a Princess of the Underworld.
  • "You kill him, they'll send another just like him...and another" - FULL BLOWN CAPITALISM
  • "The world is a cruel place" - reality
  • "She's just a woman"- sexist

Vampire Trailers

The Lost Boys (1987)

In the trailer it started with a clip of a roller coaster ride, it signified that the characters in the film and the story will have ups and downs. After the roller coaster ride scene, they showed a man playing a saxophone, a fire and people (crowd) enjoying the music, however, the vibe is dark, dark vibe can signified danger but there is a glimmer of hope- the balloons in the crowd can signify hope.
The narrator stated "Michael and Sam have just moved to Santa Carla California", this can be seen a form of Post Modernism. The narrator then continued "They are about to discover its secret", people who move to different place often look for jobs and to start a new life to a different place but there’s nothing for them no jobs available for them. In this case (film) it is different the character will be facing danger. Danger from the vampire and the place itself.
When the vampire was attacking the car of the couple, they were both together however as the trailer/clip progresses the man was gone and the woman was left alone in the car to be killed. The use of colour red represents dead and danger. (Patriarchal society)

(Generic Conventions) The Lost Boys have the same common characteristics of a typical vampire film. They can fly, they vanish in thin air, animals fear them, they suck blood, fangs, scary eyes, they have super powers, people's ideas that a sign of cross can make them go away, there is a head of the vampire, they are pale, wear black clothes, theme of love and there is a vampire leader.  However, it was set in a town not in a dark eerie forest. Also in the trailer there is no black vampire showed (Post Colonialism)
In the film Michael have a love interest a common thing for most vampire movies a common convention you can found in vampire films.

The setting/mood/characters/music
Setting
-Santa Carla California
-Festival/party, in a home
Mood
-intense
-dark
-trill and excitement
Characters
-Michael and Sam- who moved to Santa Carla
-Michael was turned into a vampire and his brother Sam refused to help him at first.
Music
-The music use at the start of the trailer was fun and exciting since the first seen was at a party or an amusement park. But as the trailer goes on the music started to change, it became more intense.
Theoretical Approaches
Feminism- Male Gaze, male dominated film, Michael's love interest is very pretty and attractive.
Post Colonialism- There is no black vampire shown in the trailer
Post Modernity- the character moved to Santa Carla

Interview with the Vampire Movie Trailer (1994)

At the start of the trailer showed a vampire came to San Francisco to tell his story and what trials and tribulations he's been through.
The films contains the generic conventions you can find in most vampire films.
At the few seconds of the trailer, the vampire played by Brad Pitt turned on the lights without touching the lights button (super powers), use silver to kill vampires, they only come out at night. Then the character stated "I haven't been human in 200 years" this is a typical generic convention of a vampire in vampires films. There is also a love affair going, the vampires in the film also eager for blood, attention and money as well as being young forever.

Other generic conventions
- Very pale
- Fangs
-They have super powers (switching on the lights)
-They live forever
-The main vampire was locked
- Husky voice
-They wear black clothes.
-Theme of love
-Very dominant eye colour

Setting
At the start of the film the setting was in San Francisco in a hotel, then it showed a forest, an eerie place. The film is a flashback of what happened to the main character played by Brad Pitt hence the tittle of the film "Interview with the Vampire"

The use of music, colour and characters
  • Similar to the Lost Boys there is a use of flog to create intense situation and eerie feel, the film contains a lot of use of the colour grey, black, yellow and red.
  • The background music used in the trailer is simple but very eerie, as the trailer progresses the background music builds up along with the scene being showed.
  • The characters were dressed really well, in black Victorian outfits.
The film contains the theoretical perspectives of Marxism, Feminism, Post Modernism and Post Colonialism
Marxism- In the film trailer it showed how wealthy the vampires are, they have everything from servants to fancy clothes. They can be seen as the bourgeoisie since they have people working for them which can be seen as the proletariat.
Feminism- The film trailer indicates that men will give anything that the women needs e.g. eternal life. It shows how women are dependent to men.
Post Modernism- At the start of the film trailer the vampire (Brad Pitt) was in San Francisco, he moved from where is from to San Francisco to start a new life, possibly rule there or just to tell his story.
Post Colonialism- In the trailer they did not show not a single black vampire, instead the blacks were fighting against the vampires. This can again linked to Marxism.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) Trailer

At the start of the trailer they showed a book which might contain the story of the Dracula in the film, it can also signify that the film will be a flashback on what happened before (History of Prince Dracula and the woman he loved).
Similar to the film The Lost Boys, the trailer of Bram Stoker's Dracula contained some sort of ride, TRAIN to be exact. It signified that the film will contain a lot of curves, different speeds, sceneries, and so on that the characters in the film will experience as well as for the audience to see.
The main character in the film (trailer) said to the woman laying (probably the love of his life) said “I have crossed oceans of time to find you". This line signified one of generic conventions of Dracula/vampires. Vampires lives for hundreds and hundreds of years, they do not die unless they are killed using a silver weapon such as a sword or a knife.

Generic conventions used in the film
- Very pale skin
- Hypnotic (with super powers)
- Very pointy nails
- Fangs
- They have eternal life
- The Dracula have a lot interest
- Wealthy
- Blood
- Animated eyes
-Theme of love
-Vampire leader
- Crucifix to make the Dracula/vampire go away.
- The characters in the film were dressed presentably, the colour black and brown are dominant in their clothing.

The setting, music and colours
In the trailer the film indicates that it is set in a very gloomy, dark and isolated place where only few people live. Similar to Lost Boys and Interview with the Vampire, the film used fog to create an effect or an eerie feel
The colours that they used are typical to most vampire movies, the colour black, red and yellow are very dominant in the film.
The background music used in the trailer is very simple (using string instruments and a little bit of the drums) but the pace of the background music started to get faster along with the intense scenes showing.

Theoretical approaches
Marxism- the Dracula used his money to attract his love interest in the film.
Feminism- Male gale, the love interest of the Dracula is very attractive
Post Colonialism- no black vampire
Post Modernism- “I have crossed oceans of time to find you" the Dracula travelled to see and be with his love interest.

Near Dark Trailer (1987) Trailer

The film in general contains a lot of violence such as kill, abduction, arson, getting hit by a truck and so on. It has this idea that crime and all sort of violence will appear as soon as it's dark.
The trailer started out with the sunset, it suggests that as soon as the light is gone the danger will come. At the start of the trailer they showed a van chasing a man and eventually got and abducted him, then a girl who was left behind probably related to the abducted man screamed.
Then it cut (trailer) to a man (who's presented with less light/dark background) who said to the man who was abducted "I want to separate your head on your shoulders", the man (killer) was then encouraged by his friends to do it, then the friend of the man pleaded "No", then the young lady who pleaded "No" was put in his situation as well and she said "might as well just kill me then". This part of the trailer shows who is the dominant one just like in a family household, father are in charge of all finances while their wife do everything that their husband asks them to do (Feminism)   Fran Ansley - "women are takers of shit" BUT as the trailer progresses it's the woman who encouraged a man to kill!

The setting/mood/colour/characters/music
Setting
The film was set in a small town with very low population, at the start of the trailer they showed a deserted place but as the trailer progresses the setting moved to a small town (Post modernism).

Mood
Very eerie, scary and dark

Colour
In the film trailer they used colours such as black, yellow, red and brown...they used very dull and dark colours to give an impression that they film will be very intense.

Characters
At the start of the film trailer we can see the man who abducted the man and the young lady is the leader of the vampires because the people around him fear him.

Music
Very intense background music

Generic Conventions
-The characters have very dark clothes on minus the cloak/cape.
-The characters are pale, they only go out when the darkness strikes.
-The use of fog to create the atmosphere/feel of the film.
-Very aggressive characteristics of the characters
-They don't die
-Vampire leader
-Animated eyes
-Blood
-Fog
The vampires in the film aren't very pale, no fangs, no capes, no special power, no pointed nails compared to the common presentation/conventions of vampires in films.

Theoretical Approaches
Feminism- the woman in the film was controlling the man and persuading him to kill, the woman in the film was in charge just like most feminists theorists like.
Post Colonialism- No black characters in the film trailer
Marxism - the use of weaponry and violence to get what the vampires want. The film trailer also showed hierarchy e.g. the police interrogating one of the vampires.

30 Days of Night Trailer

The film is about a town invaded by a group of vampires, killing/hunting animals and people for food (blood). The trailer starts out with a woman abducted and killed by a vampire (of course the woman gets killed first because she is seen as vulnerable). For 30 days of night, the village was doomed with vampires committing killings and taking over the whole town. The police/main character in the film saved the village by sacrificing himself to be a vampire to kill the master of the vampire group/gang.

The setting/mood/colour/characters/music

The music
-very intense and it builds up along with the scenes shown in the trailer

Genetic Conventions
-Pale skin
-Animate eyes
-Black clothes
-Super powers e.g. fly
-They die if exposed in sunlight, metal weapons
- Pointy nails
-Theme of love
-There’s a leader of the vampire group
-They kill people and drink their blood

 Theoretical Approaches
Marxism- There’s a leader of the vampire group, the police saved the few people left in the town from the vampire (hierarchy).
Feminism- The woman who is the love interest of the police can be seen as the sidekick while the police can be seen as the hero.

Post Colonialism- The vampires moved to the town to colonise and make it their own but they failed to do so.

AS-A2 Progression: Vampire fictions

Dark Shadows/ Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
  •       What conventions of vampire fictions are followed in your chosen text and which are ignored, or adapted?

Dark Shadows: The look of the main vampire on the film is the typical look of a vampire you can think of, where they have pale skin, they wear dark clothes, they have vampire teeth, and they cannot go under the sun and greasy hair.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter: The main looks of the Vampire for this movie are pretty much the same or the usual vampire we see, where we can find them having vampire teeth, and pale face; however, for this film most of the vampire are dress in a casual clothing unlike Dark Shadows where they were wearing almost all black clothes. On the movie Abraham Lincoln vampires were dressed like a normal person. On this movie vampires were allowed to go under the sun and not get burned as well as getting to go to church without getting burned as well. The thing that can kill them on this movie was an axe with silver tip, silver bullets etc… Anything that is made by silver vampires can be killed.

  • How would you describe the atmosphere and the tone of the texts and how is this created.

Dark Shadows: The atmosphere of the film is the typical atmosphere you can find a vampire living it; the atmosphere is dark, windy, and cold. The tone of the text is mainly about love, curse, mixture of American culture and British culture. The atmosphere is created on the colours that they used in the movie for example the colour black is the most dominant one. The locations of the movie, the forest, fish port, and most of the scenes on the movie were all filmed at the mansion with secret doors, basements.  (Sounds)

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter: The atmosphere of this movie was very intense considering the fact that there are a lot of actions going on for example, wars, killing and so on. The atmosphere consists with darkness, windy, eerie feel and fire.  All of these atmospheres were created by the situation that they were in (characters). The use of colour, location, objects that were used contributes to how the atmosphere was created.

  •  How would you describe the audience for the texts and how do the texts ensure that they appeal to these particular audiences?

Dark Shadows: The main target for the text/movie was 15 and over people, the movie contains a bit of violence and some inappropriate actions (sex). The movie is basically based on jealousy, the character named Angelic has a crush on the main character Barnabas who happened to be in love with another girl. Angelic was a witch and she hypnotised Barnabas love interest named Jossette, which lead her to her death (fallen off the cliff).  Barnabas was then cursed to be a vampire and put into a coffin 10ft below for 200 years until he escaped when local guys/construction workers opened the coffin.  The movie evolves different kinds of love for example; love for family, love for belongings, couples in love, and one true love. They appeal to their target audience by explore all sorts/types of love.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter: The main target audience for this movie is very similar to Dark Shadows; it is aimed at people loves to watch vampire movies with a twist about all sorts of love; love such as family love, mother and son, father and son, young couples and love for the nation. They ensure that they will appeal to their target audiences by telling a story somehow on the target audiences they are aiming at for example they have a section for this and that target audience.

  •  Can you summaries the plot (the narrative structure)?

Dark Shadow: The movie is about love, jealousy, revenge and anger. It’s like a love triangle in a way, Angelic wants Barnabas to love her despite he is love with someone else.  The movie is also based on family value, family possession it depicts how money can change the family’s attitude. Barnabas is the main character in this movie; he was cursed by this witch whom he had affection for before he (barnabas) met the right girl for him. Angelic is the witch in the movie, she used to be a servant in the Collinwood’s family.  Even though her name is “Angelic” she is the opposite of what we think her name stands for. When Angelic saw Barbanas kissing the one who will he marry, Angelic hypnotised Jossette (Barnabas fiancĂ©) she hypnotised and order her to walk through this gloomy forest all the way up to the cliff which lead to Jossette’s death. Barnabas tried to save her by jumping off the cliff or also for him to die along with her; however, Angelic made Barnabas a vampire. Vampires lives forever unless they are killed using a silver knife or bullet, garlic or holy water.   Barnabas was then locked into this coffin and lay below the ground; he was locked there for about 200 years until some people who worked at this road construction opened the coffin and unleashed him. Barnabas came back to his mansion, then find and fight to Angelic for his revenge for Angelic to pay all of the things she have done to him; this act at the main goal or Barnabas.

Who is the Hero? Barnabas, Jossette and all of the rest of Collinwood’s family
Villain? Angelic
What is the Hero’s goal? His goal was to be with the one who is loves in the end and be happy together as well as putting back their family business the fish port.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter: The movie is basically about revenge; Abraham saw who killed his mother; it was a vampire, he had this urge to look for the person who killed his mother for him to get his revenge and kill the one who killed his mother. He met this guy named Henry at a bar all of a sudden they became really close friends after Henry saved Abraham to the vampire who killed his mother when Abraham tried killing him. Abraham begged Henry to teach him the skills that he has (what Abraham saw when he saved him), and Henry asked Abraham if he wanted to be a vampire hunter, Abraham said yes.  Then he started training and soon enough he was killing vampires; Abraham worked on this shop to earn a living, he was also living to a spare room which can be find inside the shop. At this shop he met the love of his life Mary, he wanted to be an attorney and serve people; later on he married Mary and he became the President of the United States and had a child(boy) later on died because a vampire bitten him. This then created anger and eagerness for Abraham to make a plan on how to kill the entire vampire family; he succeeded by using silver a form of weapon which vampires dislike the most.
Villain?: Vampires
What is the hero’s goal? To kill all of the vampires

  • This is the most complicated question; what do you think the text suggest about the ideologies of the people who made them, and the people who watch them, and the society which produced them? Think about whether the things you see on screen suggest any kind of beliefs or values or attitudes. This might have to do with the women, or race, or family, or friendship, or any number of things?

Dark Shadow: Different people have different beliefs about vampires; most people who are religious see that vampires are demons or devils.  Kids are the one who are more likely to believe that vampires are true. People assume that vampires cannot go outside when there is a sun, they cannot go inside the church, they will die or get hurt if you pour them holy water and as well as the use of garlic to make them go away. Most of the time vampires are men who desire to be love and get power to control other people. I think the main reason why there are less women who act as the main character of a vampire movie/film is because women as seen as the useless one, not the tough one and the one who does not get the power or example at home.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter:  They didn’t use as sorts of traditional weapon instead they used silver, this kind of weapon does not really go to the typical weapon used when battling vampire; they are usually holy water, garlic and they cannot go outside when the sun is up. On the film the vampires can freely wonder around even when the sun is on. Both of the films have the same viewpoint in a way which is to kill people for food/blood.

  •  Finally, research your particular texts. Have there been any interesting critical responses to the texts? What have newspaper, magazine and internet sites said about your particular texts?

Dark Shadow:
“It is all perfectly decent, more relaxed and less self-conscious than the madly overdone Alice in Wonderland, and perhaps more approachable than Burton's musical Sweeney Todd. Depp always delivers funny lines with intelligence and charm, and between them Bonham Carter and Green are two of the most distinctive female leads in the business. Yet the Goth, jokey "darkness" of Burton's style is now beginning to look very familiar; he has built his brand to perfection in the film marketplace, and it is smarter and more distinctive than a lot of what is on offer at the multiplex, but there are no surprises. There are shadows, but they conceal nothing.” (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2012/may/10/dark-shadows-review)

Film: The Lorax 2012

The Lorax

The film is a book adaptation, The Lorax as a whole is about hope, hope that the greedy ones will be unselfish and stop being so greedy. It is also about nature, loving and taking care of the environment and making differences and changes.

Key Concepts
Narrative

- The Lorax is the story of a greedy Once Ler who made money from trees by making clothes out of them and a little boy named Ed who fought to bring back the trees and awareness to people.
- Tress in the film represents people, people are like trees we all experience all kinds of weather, we grow and die and so on. But trees will be forgotten while people's legacies will live.
- The Lorax (orange creature) represents conscience, on what is right or wrong, he can also be seen as the protector/God of the trees.

Discourse
The film is about making a difference and all about hope, audience can consume and see it the cinema, dvd, online film sites e.g. lovefilm and book.

Mode of address
The film is telling us to be aware of the environment and the bad things that we are doing to the nature/environment.

Ideology
Money can change people, in the film the Once ler who used the Lorax to be rich abandoned the Lorax because he got what he wanted, money and fame.

Key Theoretical Approaches
Marxism
The clip contains all concept of Marxism from the bourgeoisie (Oncer ler) who owns the means of production (clothing factory) to the proletariat (his family members).

Marxism/post modernism

Another character in the film who is also like a bourgeoisie is O'Hare, he makes and sells air for a living (he hates trees because trees gives air for free), who's also responsible for the growth of technology e.g. electronic trees, camera all over the town in the film

Post colonialism
There is no black main character in the film.

Film: The Help 2011

The Help

Key Concepts
Narrative
The film The Help is about the trials and tribulations of black maids working in white middle class families and a white middle class woman played by Emma Stone trying to help the black maids to get their stories out and make changes in the white middle class system (patriarchal society).

-The maid called Minny baked a pie for her boss as a peace offering about something that she did "wrong" (she used their toilet when she was not allowed to use it (Whites and Blacks cannot share the same toilet), she was then fired), however, Minny said "Eat my shit", it signified "this is the last time you will see me again, you will not bully me/treat me badly ever again, I had enough". or it be seen as a humorous form of revenge.

-In the movie when the book called "The Help" was released the perception of the black working class maids changed. In a way the book acted/seen as a "bible" of the black working class maids, the book contained all of the bad things that the white middle class people did to them.

Discourse
The message of the film, is to gain awareness/make people aware to this day on what happened before. The consumers can consume it in cinemas and book since the film was based on the novel written by Kathryn Stockett.

Mode of address
The film is telling us what happened before the American Civil Rights came about.

Ideology
It tells us about the difference between different classes and how black people are treated differently because of the colour of their skin.

Key Theoretical Approaches
Marxism - The white middle class people exploits the black working class people(maids/the help).
and treat them unequally and terribly (they are not allowed to use the same toilet as the white middle class people). The black maids are not paid really well for their labour.
The black working class people (the maids) are so draw to religion, they think that God will save them and make their life a better. Religion creates false consciousness and dual consciousness, the black working class in film changed their views (dual consciousness) to make changes,  make people aware about their situation, they decided that they will talk about the things that their white middle class bosses did to  them. Skeeter (a white middle class female played by Emma Stone) is the one who wanted to bring about change and the editor/writer of the book "The Help" in the film.

Feminism - The character named Skeeter ( a white middle class female) got a job as a writer and her fellow female friends tease her for working as well as not being so pretty and attractive (The Beauty Myth, Naomi Wolf) . Skeeter female friends don't work they stay at home and dependent to their husband. This film is challenging the the patriarchal society and make changes.

Post colonialism
Angela Barry talks about the representation and identity of blacks in the media. In the film black maids are presented as the troublemaker, entertainer and the dependant.
Troublemaker: because some of them went against the laws and rules of the white government or the white middle class families as a whole. e.g. not allowed to use the whites toilet
Entertainer: because the white middle class families laugh at black maids mistakes and punish them.
Dependant:  Black maids are dependant to the white middle class families they need them in order to gain money.

However, The film is about true to life story of African-American maids working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi, during the early 1960s.
