Pan's Labyrinth an adaptation of traditional fairy tale narrative challenging the meta narratives of everyday.
- In the film the little girl can be seen as the protagonist. She was going against the things that she is not allowed to do for example walk through the woods alone.
- The mother in the film doesn't not support her daughter reading all sorts of fairy tale books, her views about fairy tales is very different to what we expect mothers to be and exposing to their children.
- The film was set in the World War 2 which is already challenging the fairy tale norms. Fairy tales are usually set in not so intense and dark setting.
- The film started with "A long time ago...." - Typical way to start a fairy tale film or book.
- The little girl and her mother moved to where the Captain ("father") is based. "He's been good to us" - mother, this suggests to us that the mother is dependent to the captain. She is also carrying their son.
- The captain in the film can be seen as the Bourgeoisie while its soldiers and servants can be seen as the Proletariat.
- The captain is the stepfather of the little girl, her father real father is dead. The mother being in a relationship with the captain suggest to us that woman can live without man, she needs a husband than just her daughter.
- The little girl in the film wants to "reclaim" her role as a Princess of the Underworld.
- "You kill him, they'll send another just like him...and another" - FULL BLOWN CAPITALISM
- "The world is a cruel place" - reality
- "She's just a woman"- sexist
